Elon Reeve Musk is a business executive and engineer whose companies operate across electric vehicles, spaceflight, artificial intelligence, and other categories. In the humanoid robotics field, he is significant as the chief executive of Tesla, Inc., under whose direction Tesla announced the Optimus humanoid platform in August 2021 and shepherded the platform through its Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 iterations.
Role in humanoid robotics
Musk announced the Tesla Bot (later renamed Optimus) at the first Tesla AI Day event in August 2021. The announcement was made in the context of Tesla's broader positioning as an artificial intelligence company, with the humanoid as an extension of the neural network stack developed for Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) program. Musk personally introduced the Optimus prototype at the September 2022 AI Day event and has continued to be the public face of the platform's development, with major announcements including the March 2026 Abundance Summit disclosure of Optimus Gen 3.
The Tesla Optimus program is one of the most publicly visible humanoid robotics initiatives worldwide, and its price target (USD 20,000 to 25,000 per unit at production scale) has been a reference point in industry discussions of humanoid market development. Background
Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971. He attended the University of Pretoria briefly before emigrating to Canada, where he studied at Queen's University. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving degrees in physics and economics. His subsequent career has included co-founding Zip2, X.com (later merged with PayPal), SpaceX (2002), and Tesla, Inc. (joining as chairman in 2004 and becoming chief executive in 2008).
